O'Neil entered O'Neil took part in the Canadian Idol third season auditions in the spring of 2005, when he was still in highschool. She made it to the 100th round since the judges were impressed by her vocal performance. O'Neil's performance was highly praised by judges. But, O'Neil suffered a significant drop in top 10 and Top 9 final weeks when she received votes for the top 3, and the bottom 2. The judges were shocked, and they suggested to the audience to choose Melissa as one of the contestants with the greatest ability to sing. O'Neil's performances were such awe-inspiring that she was never in the lower three in the future. O'Neil's performance on the 7th September of 2005 was awe-inspiring that the judge Werner predicted the newspaper headlines. O'Neil beat Rex Goudie and became the third Canadian Idol. O'Neil was promptly congratulated by Canadian PM Paul Martin for winning Canadian Idol.
