O'Grady is a native of Detroit, Michigan, the daughter of Jan and Jim O'Grady, a financial planner. Her parents raised her in Wheaton (Illinois) as well. She graduated in 1981 from the North High School in Wheaton. The model was featured in several commercials prior to moving into Los Angeles in 1986. Her first job was model for Montgomery Ward model, where she was also featured in several commercials. She made her debut on screen in the romantic drama Having a Baby in 1988. She later played a regular role in the ABC drama China Beach alongside Dana Delany. She has also guest starred as a guest on independent films and TV shows. Her first major role was as Donna Abandando on the ABC police series NYPD Blue. O'Grady's role as the tall and blonde squad secretary was in the series from 1993 until 1996. For each of those years she won an Emmy Award in the category for Outstanding Supporting Performance of Drama Series. The cast and O'Grady received an award from the Screen Actors Guild Award of Outstanding Performance by a Drama Series Ensemble in 1995.
